I would imagine travel budget plays a part in that. You might have a civilian team of 4 to 6 pilots, they fly their own aircraft around to shows, but there's no money or space to fly "support" staff or narrators around the country. The big teams also want firm control over the presentation...

Does anybody know the orientation of the show, which direction the crowd faces? I ask, because looking at the picture they have showing the box seats, those are facing directly into the sun, at least at the time the picture was taken.
