Hi, what was the criteria to become a finalist.

Nothing specific; we assembled all of the entries into a folder and looked over all of them. We picked some that we felt were the best in a technical sense - in focus, properly exposed, sharp, etc. We wanted to give amateurs a fair shot too, so we also took care to pick some that maybe had some technical issues but that exhibited an eye for composition or timing.
No names were attached to the photos, so it was as blind as an informally organized contest can really be. We targeted 16 finalists and ended up with 18, which we posted here in somewhat a random order. If it was easier to have a poll with 100+ options, we probably would have.
I don't want anyone to be upset that their photos weren't picked. I've seen contests that are entirely focused on the technical aspect and I've seen contests where the winners were extremely average photos. We tried to walk the middle of the road on this one and had to leave some intriguing photos behind. Ultimately I just hope it's fun for everyone!
