2018 Joint Base Charleston Air and Space Expo

Post by awal2049 » Thu Mar 22, 2018 5:40 pm

Joint Base Charleston will host an Air Show this year for the first time since 2011. They’ve got a decent lineup so far, with a surprising amount of warbirds attending. Despite some information that’s out there, this event will be SATURDAY ONLY April 28. If you’re planning to do this and Wings Over Myrtle Beach, you need to get Sunday tickets for Myrtle Beach.

The air show will continue as planned if the Thunderbirds cancel.

Apparently Prowlers of the Pacific will also feature a P-40 Warhawk from Cavanaugh Flight Museum

Performers:
USAF Thunderbirds
F-35A 33rd Fighter Wing
F-16 Demo only
C-17 Demo
C-17 Globemaster HF with C-47 Skytrain (Cavanaugh Flight Museum)
CAF Prowlers of the Pacific (FG-1D, SBD, S2C, B5N)
Cavanaugh Flight Museum P-40 Warhawk (part of PotP)
AeroShell Aerobatic Team
Acemaker East T-33
Randy Ball MiG-17
F-86 Demo
Warrior Flight Team L-39
Gary Ward MX-2
Bill Stein EDGE 540
Kevin Coleman Extra 330
Greg Koontz & Alabama Boys
Black Daggers
AH-1 Cobra Demo
Man vs. Impossible - Strongman Mark Kirsch to pull a C-17

Statics:
CAF Red Tail P-51C
B-52 Stratofortress
F-22A Raptor
F-15E Strike Eagle
787 Dreamliner (cancelled)
747 Dreamlifter (confirmed through Facebook)
B-1B Lancer
AH-1 Cobra
MQ-8 Reaper
RC-135
F-16C Fighting Falcon
C-130J Hercules
A-10 Thunderbolt
C-5M Galaxy
KC-10
C-17 Globemaster III (Duh!)

Update: this is a first - the event will be giving out water for free!

I am glad they are doing a show after a long hiatus, I know they keep the C-17's flying pretty continuously, so it is nice that they are taking time out to let the public in. As for the list of performers, it looks a lot like the show I just went to at Luke, heavy on the little loop-de-loops and light on actual Air Force planes flying. I know the general public goes nuts for the Thunderbirds, but I would much prefer more variety in showing what the Air Force flies and its capabilities. The C-17/C-47 heritage flight will make it worth a trip on its own, hopefully there will be some interesting statics to go with it.

Looks like a good show now. Just crossing my fingers and hoping the Thunderbirds won’t cancel, but they probably will for the stand down period.

I read somewhere that they are substituting the F-16 Demo team for the Thunderbirds at one of the other shows and since there is a scheduled heritage flight with an F-16 here, that would be an easy substitution.

The F-16 Demo Team is already performing in Myrtle Beach. I guess it’s possible, but I think it would be too taxing for the F-16 to do two demos and heritage flights in one day. We’ll have to wait and see. The A-10 Demo Team is free that week, so that’s what I was thinking would happen.
