Northern Illinois Airshow 2018

Post by kalamazookid » Fri Jun 01, 2018 2:03 pm

The annual airshow in Waukegan, IL is scheduled for September 8. The show just updated its list of performers. Looks like a good mix of warbirds and civilian acts.

The air show is usually pretty good and the food at this event is also very good. They have a lot of local vendors that sell food.

This will be my first trip. It's been on my list for a while, but something has always come up to prevent me from going. I've heard great things. Especially looking forward to seeing all the WHF aircraft in the air.

I am looking forward to this airshow for one main reason.

Moonbeam McSwine is coming home!

The Warbird Heritage Foundation announced Wednesday that they’ve purchased the P-51 Mustang named “Moonbeam McSwine” from its most recent owner, Mr. Frederic Akary of France. The aircraft will reside under a new FAA registration number, N51VL, in honor of Vlado Lenoch.

Heard that this might be the last year for the A-4 demo. If so, I'll make sure to appreciate it even more next weekend.

Hope the weather forecast improves.

Interesting, have not heard that and not sure what the reason would be. Any word on why?

Not sure on the reason, but I trust the person I heard it from. My understanding is that the aircraft will still be flown, just not the full aerobatic demo anymore.

As of now, rain is likely Saturday. Any chance they would push it off til Sunday?

Ah, that kind of makes sense with some of the talk around the warbird community this year. The problem is that a pilot needs to be approved to fly aerobatics, and Vlado was the only guy in the area who was qualified to give that approval for jets (not sure about non-jets). With him gone, there has been no one to recertify the jet warbird pilots as their previous certs expire. Paul Wood is apparently working toward that same status now, but he can't certify himself so his aerobatic demos may be over until/unless someone else certifies him again.

Jive was in high demand in Terre Haute because he is one of the people who can certify others. In fact, the Sabre and F-5 were both there specifically to cross paths with Jive and get signed off.

That's just my educated guess - hopefully it isn't over for good :|
