Really good news for photogs!
2019 Air Show Security and Camera Lens Restriction Update:

Naval Air Station Oceana will NOT be implementing camera lens size restrictions at the 2019 Air Show due to a thorough evaluation of air show industry standards and evolving security protocols. We remain committed to ensuring that the NAS Oceana Air Show provides an environment that is safe and enjoyable for all members of the public.

How does this affect guests, aviation enthusiasts, photographers, and media personnel?

1. Due to updated lens guidelines, there is no longer a "Jet Fan Pass" program.

2. Friday's practice Air Show is limited to DoD ID cardholders, family members, and approved media personnel.

3. ALL published photographers and media personnel are encouraged to apply for a Media Pass. (https://www.oceanaairshow.com/modules/m ... d41e38049/)

Additionally, the following info covers our procedures for screening all items that are brought to the 2019 Air Show:

All bags and hand-carried items are subject to search and inspection prior to entry onto the flight line. Additionally, all visitors are required to enter the flight line via walk-through metal detectors. All bags and hand-carried items will be run through X-ray scanners or visually searched/inspected inside and out to ensure the safety of all guests. Failure to comply with this inspection will result in denial of access to the air show ramp.

Any bag too large to fit through the X-ray scanner will be visually searched/inspected inside and out by our security staff. While there is NO size restriction on camera lenses, any camera lens over approximately 12 inches long will require visual inspection prior to authorization for entry. Photographers are authorized to assist our security personnel with the visual inspection of lenses over 12” to avoid potential damage to your equipment.

Our security staff are in place to ensure the safety of all visitors so your cooperation with this process is greatly appreciated. Failure to comply with this inspection will result in denial of access to the air show ramp.

Hey there, long time reader, first time poster. Anyone have any guesses/ideas on the statics this year? Will be my first time since 2011, hoping to get down Thursday to shoot some arrivals.

I honestly cannot remember that last year Oceana posted a static display list on their website prior to the show. I do recall one of the recent years they did publish a static list on their Facebook page about a week or so before the show. I believe that was maybe 2 years ago. If it happens at all that is probably your best bet.

It's funny because getting info on this show didn't used to be like pulling teeth. On some of the forums years ago the airshow director would post constant updates in the months leading up to the sow. Now we can't even get finalized lists of performers and static displays. It's honestly like they have lost interest in putting on this show.

Even if the Rhino demo flies this is by far the weakest lineup they have every put together. I completely understand the budget shortfall for East Coast squadrons and I know readiness is top priority so that is obviously impacting things. After all I thought the lineup for the 2018 show was fantastic so maybe it's just a down year and we will get closer to lineups of years past in 2020.

Oceana had a big reduction in their public affairs staff in the last few years. With turnover and being short staffed it made things difficult.

Word from MAM (museum I volunteer at) is taking the PBY Catalina and FW-190 A8 to be static and I know each of the squadrons usually puts their CAG planes as static but that’s all I know
