What's the reason for putting the planes as static?

It is nice to see a representative jet from each of the squadrons.

Static Hornets were very few last year because of deployments and jet availability.

2017 was excellent with more than 15 Hornets from different squadrons.

The "Squadron Mall" is incredible. If you want to get Squadron "swag", Oceana is the place to be. All the squadrons set-up their tents and you can go crazy buying items. Pilots are usually there for some nice conversation.

According to their schedule the Altus c-17/Kc-135 demo team will be performing.

Seems like a pretty long show for the amount of acts they have, seems to be a lot of time between acts. Is that how this show usually works? Just curious before I go.

My wife and I have been coming to Oceana Air Shows since 2006. The shows that September weekend were amazing. A lot has changed since then. I signed up for my photo pass last year, and briefly waited in that huge line for a chance to pick it up. I say briefly, because after 30 minutes of imperceptible line movement, I though, the state of the current air show line up wasn’t worth losing beach time. We came down again this year, but I didn’t even pack my long lenses. Yes the Thunderbirds are incredible, but I can watch them for three days from the beach at 40th Street. As good as they are, I unwilling to endure the base exit issues for 20 minutes of stellar flying.

The line-up this year pales in comparison to most civil air shows. The reality is the current line-up is easily the weakest in the past 13 years. I saw what appeared to be a practice for the Air Power Demo (Fleet Fly-by) this morning: a flight of four F-18s were circling over the beach while one Hornet (could only see one from 40th Street) made the standard attack runs on the airfield). I didn’t see any refueling practice, but perhaps its early in the week. Long gone are the days when the Air Power Demo was 8-12 aircraft in the fleet fly-by. It’s a shame there is no appearance by an F-35. That would have given me reason to endure the egress nightmare.

I was at the Military Aviation Museum last Saturday, and I was fortunate enough to see a P-39 Air Cobra fly. This coming Saturday a Spitfire is the scheduled performer. There’s no long entry or exit queues, the static’s are stellar, and for photography, there’s decent lighting and background to shoot against, and clear lines of sight. There’s no silly cars burning rubber and frankly, the shock-wave thing wears thin after a few times. I’m coming down for next May’s WWII weekend. No jet noise, but the aircraft variety is unparalleled.

Perhaps Oceana’s best air show days are in the past. Budget and training issues are obviously priorities over flying to entertain. I still count myself lucky that I can see two dozen or more training sorties over the beach every day (although the number of those is significantly less than last year), so I get my share of jet noise. I suppose this is really a lament for days past: the F-14 is history, and perhaps so are the flying line-ups that made for such incredible shows.

Ok, did I overlook it or is the Air Power Demo missing from the schedule?

Seems to be missing. No sign of any practice over the beach yet.

I am sure it was just an oversight on the schedule with regards to the Air Power Demo. If you look there are also a couple other performers not listed including the jump teams that will likely perform twice.

Despite the earlier post, the Air Power Demo was already performed this morning from 10-11am. They actually had 7 jets up today including an Ambush aggressor as opposed to the 5 jets that were part of it yesterday. Looked like several of the passes went directly over the beach from my vantage point. I am surprised you didn't see them.
