NAS Key West Air Show 2019

Post by NickM » Sat Aug 11, 2018 1:21 pm

Hi, just wondering if anyone has been to a previous air show here before and know the airfield layout?
I’m a photographer and was hoping whether somebody would know if it’s a photo friendly airfield and where the runway is in relation to the crowd line. Nothing worse than trying to take pictures with the sun in your face all day.

Thanks in advance,

Nick.

I really don't remember, but it seems like I've seen some photos that were pretty backlit from the last show they had. I am really hoping to do this show next year, as I love the F-5, and...it's Key West. What I truly hope to do, and it will be a crazy trip is to pull off NAS Key West, and Tyndall AFB airshow the same weekend. It's like a 13 hr drive in between them, but I'm down to try.

The Key West airshow is a pretty low-key airshow. Not as many performers as the larger shows such as a NAS Oceana or other East Coast shows. The crowds are smaller, too. I would go to their website and look at their map. airshowkeywest.com Also, pull up the airfield on Google Maps so you have an idea of where you want to hang-out. As for photography, you are facing south watching the show with the runways in front of you. The sun will be an issue at times. I've been there for the last two shows (only every 3 years) and it is just an excuse to go to Key West. Not the greatest airshow to go to, but hey, the Blues are there!! The F-5 demo is neat, at least it's something we normally don't see flying at other shows. Hotels are crazy expensive and about full for that weekend right now. I am heading down earlier in the week and leaving after the Saturday show. That was the only way I could get a place at a "reasonable" $260/night. Everything else is pushing $800 on up a night as of this posting. Hope you already have a place. Enjoy the show.

Always wanted to do this show. It was tough this year with Melbourne falling on the same weekend. Maybe some day.

Nice shots! Love the F-5s especially. Got anymore, or how about the static shots of the F-5? Thanks.
