Do you think they will at least replace the demos with Legacy flights? Or will those few shows just be out of luck?

I would hope so, but they haven't said anything about that yet.

With the cancellation of their remaining schedule, does this mean that the Oceana Airshow this September won't have the demo at their home base? :?

They said no Oceana for now, but I give it a 50/50 chance of working out.

I would love for somebody with more knowledge of the situation to be able to chime in and set me straight because from a 30,000 foot view the whole thing makes little sense. What I can't understand is why VFA-106 cannot support a mere 5 shows for the rest of the season, but VFA-122 can continue to provide Legacy Flights. Regardless of whether the jets are doing a full Tac Demo or a Legacy Flight the aircraft are not available for training purposes essentially from Thursday to Monday when they are supporting airshows.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe Lemoore is not as badly impacted as Oceana with regards to the shortage of flyable Super Hornets for training purposes due to the arrival of the F-35 out there. That said I was under the impression the shortage was fleet wide. Even so it's hard for me to believe that in a given weekend 2 aircraft out of the 50+ Rhinos in VFA-106 aren't airworthy and available to support the remaining schedule without having a significant impact on training.

I’m sure it has more to do with the accelerated phase-out of legacy Hornets from east coast units and getting those squadrons transitioned to the Super. The west coast FRS, as you noted, is already past that and probably closer to business as usual.

One factor is that maintain demo profeciency is more intensive than flying Legacy Flights. It likely involves multiple practices at Oceana between those 5 shows, meaning extra cost and time dedicated to it.

At one point I heard that VFA-122 was hurting so badly last year that 106 had to lend a hand. If that is true, it may be coming back to get them now. Plus, demos are much harder on a jet than a relatively gentle LF profile.

According to Navy Times, the team jumped the gun a little bit with that announcement and the Tacdemos may still be on.

Also they referenced a very awesome website in their article!
