C-5M Galaxy Grounded (Again)

Post by awal2049 » Thu Jul 20, 2017 1:50 am

All 18 C-5M Super Galaxies at Dover AFB, Delaware were grounded pending inspection following 2 separate incidents in recent months. The nose gear are having difficulty extending all the way and locking according to an Air Firce spokesman. The first incident occurred at Naval Station Rota, Spain on May 23. This standown only affects the 18 C-5's stationed at Dover, not all 56 in service. This is the second sidelining of the C-5M this year. In April, 8 reserve C-5M's were "mothballed" due to budget issues. The Air Force has since promised a resolution to bring those C-5's back into service. The planes at Dover will all be thoroughly inspected before returning to the air.

The issue has been identified. The problem is with the ball screw in the nose gear that prevents it from fully extending. As of now, 5 of Dover's 18 C-5s have been serviced and returned to operational status. The rest are still waiting to be serviced.

In other news, the C-5's at Westover Air Reserve Base in Massachusetts have been grounded as well. All remaing C-5's at both bases will remain grounded until they receive the necessary parts.

Another nose-gear-up landing happened at Travis AFB yesterday. Crossing my fingers that the whole fleet isn't grounded again.
