Remembering the Sknyliv Disaster

Post by awal2049 » Sat Jul 29, 2017 1:17 am

Yesterday marks the 15th anniversary of the worst air show disaster in history. On July 27, 2002, a Ukrainian SU-27 Flanker crashed into the crowd during an air show at Sknyliv airfield near Lviv, Ukraine. The crash killed 77 people and injured 543, give or take, and damaged other aircraft on the ground. The pilots executed dangerous maneuvers with which they were unexperienced. They ejected with minor injuries but we're later sentenced to prison for the incident. I'm sure many of you have seen a video of the crash at some point. Perhaps some more of you have seen the graphic aftermath video, showing some of the victims of the carnage. It is a gut wrenching reminder of the risks air show pilots take with every performance.
