B-1B & B-2A Retirement In 2020’s?

Post by awal2049 » Tue Feb 13, 2018 2:21 am

I keep reading today that the US Air Force is planning to retire it’s B-1B Lancer and B-2A Spirit Fleet in the 2020’s to facilitate the arrival of the B-21 Raider. This is part of the fiscal budget of 2019 released by Congress today. Meanwhile, they plan to keep the B-52 in service until the 2050’s!

Is this for real??? I read on Wikipedia that the B-1B is currently slated to serve until 2045 and the B-2A until 2058. Why would they cut these planes’ lifespans short in their technological prime? And what’s so special about the B-52 that it’s worth keeping flying for 100 years? I guess it just comes down to money, but I find it hard to believe that the B-52 has more bang for its buck than either the Bone or the Stealth Bomber.
