An F4H-1F Phantom II is currently up for sale from at French Valley Airport in California. This early production Phantom is one of only 45 that were produced before the first F-4B’s entered production. Bu. 145310 is one if the oldest surviving Phantoms in existence, and it is currently part of a restoration project by Platinum Fighters.
The F-4H-1F was an early variant of the F-4 Phantom II that was used for flight testing. In 1961, Bu. 145310 took part in bomb testing, proving the planes capabilities as a strike platform instead of a pure fighter as intended. Later in the same year, it became one of three Phantoms in the “Sageburner” tests in which the Phantom set the world air speed record for low altitude flight (902.714 mph at 125 ft).
The plane is currently 80-85% restored to flying status, with an avionics upgrade and a major engine overhaul to be completed. It is civilian owned and will be sold for $3.95 million. We could very well have a second F-4 Phantom on the air show circuit soon!
