WC-130 crash in Savannah, Georgia

Post by awal2049 » Wed May 02, 2018 6:27 pm

A National Guard WC-130 from the 156th Airlift Wing in Puerto Rico has crashed near the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airpot in Georgia. A crew of 9 was on board, which is more than the standard of 5 for that aircraft. Their status is unknown, but I have to imagine they were killed. The crash occurred suddenly and at low altitude, and there was little time for anyone to react. The WC-130 is a variant of the C-130 Hercules used for weather reconnaissance.

Update: all nine crew have been confirmed dead. Their identities are being withheld pending next of kin notification.

All 5 crew confirmed dead. The plane crashed into an intersection, at Hwy 20 and Crossgate Rd. Surprised nobody else got hurt. Some pics I've seen show the plane in a complete downward attitude before impact. Willing to bet it spun in.

There is video of the crash from a nearby security camera, it was a classic spin/stall at low altitude. Gut-wrenching to watch. I am also shocked that no one else on the ground was involved!

Doesn’t look to be pulling that hard prior to the spin. I’m wondering now if there was a loss of power

Now I’m seeing info that the plane had a crew of 9? I wish people would get the stories straight before publishing them.

Crew of nine confirmed, all dead. The plane was 60 years old. Here’s a bit of irony: the plane was on its final flight. It was outbound to Davis-Monthan to be sent to the boneyard.
