Refinished Blue Angels F-11F Tiger on display at Millington-Memphis Airport

Post by awal2049 » Sat Jun 02, 2018 10:41 pm

An F-11F Tiger formerly belonging to Millington Naval Air Base has been restored in Blue Angel colors by James Jones, a local car refurbisher. The plane was used there as a trainer after it served on a carrier. Once the base closed operations, it was left on a pedestal under contract as a display aircraft. Being outside in the elements meant it was in need of repairs. The Navy had wanted to reacquire the aircraft and put it on display at NAS Pensacola. The Millington Airport Authority decided to take over the lease. They hired Jones to refinish the plane at his shop and have it towed to Millington Memphis Airport for permanent display. The display was opened today with an open cockpit event for the public. It will stay there until September, when it will be mounted on a pedestal at the airport.

I went by there about 6 weeks ago and wondered where the plane had gone too.

So they left it on a pedestal until it was in bad shape, they spent the time to fix it up, and now it's going right back on a pedestal? Talk about not learning from mistakes...

Lol @RyanS, I think they put a sealant under the paint to prevent the wear down this time. But yeah it doesn't seem wise.

Related: this similar F-11A Tiger, Bu. 141802, has been on display in New Bern, NC since 2010. According to the plaque, this one actually flew with the team. I took these while out and about today.
