Top Gun 2 in Production

Post by awal2049 » Sun May 28, 2017 1:35 am

A sequel to the 1986 blockbuster is apparently in production, according to the cast and crew of the movie. Right now, the only confirmed actor for the movie is Tom Cruise as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. Although, media outlets are reporting that Val Kilmer will be returning to play Iceman. Presumably, they will serve as instructors at the school for pilots flying the Super Hornet (in a way, the sequel to the Tomcat). Not much else is confirmed about the movie yet.

I'm not sure how I feel about this happening. On one hand, I really enjoyed Top Gun and appreciate the complexity of some of the shots scenes they filmed. On the other, I know that exact experience is not possible anymore, and I don't know how involved the U.S. Navy would want to get today. There will probably be lots of CGI involved, whereas the planes in Top Gun were all really flying.

Here is a promotional poster. I don't know how legitimate it is.

Dumb title. This is one that should have been left alone. I can't imagine it will come anywhere close to the legendary status of the original

Would have much rather it be called Top Gun 2... I guess it's kinda like Talladega Nights though. They didn't call it Talladega Nights 2.. .

I kind of agree with you guys, I hope it's somewhat original. These days, everything is just a remake that coasts on the nostalgia of the first film. Doesn't provide any real sustenance.

In other news, a release date is confirmed in July 2019. That's two years from now. Interesting that they would set that before filming.

Cant remember where I saw it but it was Tom Cruise talking about doing another Top Gun and he said he wouldn't do another unless they could team up with the navy again and film actual jets not cgi. So fingers crossed this has happened. It would be great for recruiting for the navy.

I remember hearing he wanted to be in the aircraft for filming. I doubt they would let him do that, but this article has a picture of a jet on sight at the shooting area, could just be a static though.

Inserting mandatory “Tom Cruise on a motorcycle” cliche...

Release has been delayed one year, new release date is June 26, 2020. Tbh, I'm starting to care much less about this movie the more I hear about it.
