SS is shutter priority?
If so, I cannot set exposure compensation while in shutter priority.
And I am experiencing very dark shadows on all my photos while in auto or shutter priority;
Requiring -15 to -40 gamma correction...time consuming.
re: in air photos
My D3300 is a kit camera and came with a 55-200mm lens
I upgraded to a 55-300mm over the winter, but frankly that is still not big enough to make satisfying in air photos from the ground.
Thanks for the hint on 1/200 ->1/250 for those photos though, I will give it a try for photo and low passes where that little lens can still be of benefit.

Shutter priority is TV on Canons and S on Nikons. Exposure compensation should work like normal, and the camera should be able to adjust to properly expose unless you are in some unusual conditions. Usually what happens is the shutter is set to be open for so long that the tiniest aperture still lets in too much light, and the picture is overexposed. Obviously that doesn't sound like your issue.LarryWyatt wrote: ↑Thu May 11, 2017 8:16 pm SS is shutter priority?

I don't know what the problem might be without looking at the camera and/or some of the original files, but I do think that shutter priority is really what you want in this situation. If you are really that keen on controlling the exposure, you could always go to full manual and set it yourself.

I shot a D7100 a few years ago & Exposure Compensation was available in Shutter Priority. I used it all the time when trying Nikon but stuck with my Canon gear due to better (and much more expensive) L series lenses. Re read your manual. In Canon about the only mode EC doesn't work in is full Auto or Manual but they are slowly adding it to Manual on some bodies now.

I downloaded the manual from here & pages 73 & 74 say EC is available for you.

A bit more advice & I'm in Canada where prices are higher. AF speed of just about any camera / lens combo is relative to the price of both pieces of equipment & because I shoot model aviation much more than full scale I've gone through a lot of gear finding what works well. The best bang for you buck in a long zoom that's good for aviation & still hand holdable I've shot is the Sigma 150-600 C which I now use on my 7D2 (1.6 crop factor) but it's a bit long for team photos like the Snowbirds so I use my Canon 28-300 L IS & the Nikon 28-300 is NOT a good choice in the Nikon lens listings. Too soft & too slow in the AF department. I do not recommend that lens for serious use in this game. Their 70-300 VR G was the best of the lenses I tried BUT the new 80-400 came out at about the time I sold off my Nikon gear. I have read good things about it but haven't shot it.

Thank you for the sound advice and the effort you took to investigate my problem. The D3300_NT(En)02_User's Manual is actually a little clearer on EC than the more complete D3300RM_(En)03_Reference Manual I had been using.

I thank you too for the sound advice.
While I shot Manual with my Pentax ME Super back in the last century I think it will be some time before I master it [or want to master it] in a DSLR
It was not my intention to hijack this thread for my own learning curve.
But I am eager to solve this irritating over exposure issue I am experiencing.
So I will begin another thread for that purpose.
I see that the attachment feature in phpBB retains picture metadata, so the examples that I post using the attachment tool will be helpful for evaluation purposes.

I was having a hard time with overexposure when my shutter was below 1/100. The Aperture would always increase to f/20 or f/22 and my shots would look fuzzy or out of focus. I tried manual mode but any decrease in aperture would overexpose. So I "gave up" and bought a 3-stop ND filter. I had a chance on Sunday to test it out and it worked well. I was able to get down to 1/60 with an aperture of f/10 and no over exposure or out of focus look. Anything under 200mm came out great, but I still need to practice on my panning out to 400mm. I should have another chance next weekend and I'll report back my findings.

i don't think any of this is a hi jacking so no need to worry there. I don't know if this will help but I wrote it a while back hoping for a bit more input from the Nikon camp (for the differences in terminology) & it was wrote for model aviation but almost everything is valid for full scale except the shutter speed recommendations. The message about thinking about how to frame a shot may be helpful too.
