2018 NAS Oceana Sept 22 & 23
Good show despite the long delay on Friday getting photo/media passes. Statics were sparse but interesting but the airshow was by far the best I've been to this year.

Back home after a long weekend in Norfolk. This was my 5th show at Oceana.
It was a bit stressful Saturday morning getting the Jet Fan pass from the media center. I got there around 8:10AM and there were only 4 people ahead of me. There was only one person taking photos and printing the ID's out. Several others where there to check ID's before getting to the photos station. I can easily see how this can become a bottle neck as more photographers show up.
Once I had my precious pass I jumped back in line to park the car. It was a very quick process at that time of the morning. Walking to the entrance fully loaded with two bodies and lenses, I was stopped by another photographer who apparently wasn't aware of the jet fan pass. He saw the gear I was carrying and was being helpful warning me before I got too far from my car. He had a small kit zoom lens on his camera that was about 1/2 the size of my 80-200 f/2.8 lens. Apparently security checked to see that his lens zoomed to 300mm and he was turned away. This told me that security was not just going by the visual size of the lens to determine it's focal length.
I choose to sit on the bleachers again this year and this is where another rule was enforced much to the detriment of anyone looking to photograph. You were not allowed to stand at all in the bleachers! Apparently someone fell off a bleacher last year and this year the rules are no standing for anyone. As a photographer, this was basically putting you in a box because there is no way to track and follow the planes from a distance. Your field of view with the camera is limited or you end up hitting your neighbor in the face with your lens.
My neck and butt were seriously hurting after sitting on that metal bleacher for close to 7 hours and trying to juggle two heavy camera bodies and lenses. Anyone with leg or circulatory issues better think twice about heading to the bleachers!
Down in the seating area near the fence, this no standing rule was also strictly enforced. I saw many frustrated photographers eventually give up and leave for the less restrictive general crowd area. Unfortunately they would not be able to see the runways as the planes take off and return.
After this show, it was about 90 minutes of sitting in the car before we were to get off base. Have some extra water and snacks in the car to prepare for this. Good thing it was overcast by this point and not too hot.
After all that, here is a link to my photos of the event. I still have to process the Super Hornet demo and the Blue Angels so check the album again in a few days.

Yes I noticed Saturday that they weren’t allowing people to stand in the bleachers. That looked awful. I sat far left every day so I didn’t have to worry about it. Regarding the jet pass line. It was near a 2 hour wait for those in line on Friday. I was a bit early so I got it in about an hour and a half. However I must have been insanely lucky as I got in and out in less than 10 minutes each day. Oceana was nearly a perfect show for me. I’m sorry to those who didn’t have the best time!

The jet pass given out of Friday was just so poorly executed, stood in line for 3 hours. I and may others figured that the passes would have been premade since we had to send them a picture, and that why would just verify everything before we got the pass. Only thing that made it slightly better was being able to chat with airshow fans. I sat in the seating area and as other where saying got yell at to standing, even offer to stand in the back where the only thing behind me would have been the Port-A-Jons but was told no. So I had many picture of the orange fence and the back of peoples head.

I heard a mention of this rule a few months ago and it was part of my decision to skip the show. I did enjoy the bleachers for the view but it's a no go if I can't stand. I haven't been since 2014 and wasn't sure when it had been implemented. Sorry that it got sprung on you!pistolpete13 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 24, 2018 4:07 pm I choose to sit on the bleachers again this year and this is where another rule was enforced much to the detriment of anyone looking to photograph. Great photos Airplanefreak2000! You definitely know how to get the peak of the action, especially with the multiple SnowBird crossing shots.
At the risk of starting a religious war, Nikon or Canon and what focal length lens? (I'm basically a huge gearhead)
