US Navy Retiring Legacy Hornet on February 1st

Post by awal2049 » Wed Jan 30, 2019 12:26 am

This news came out of the blue for me. The last squadron in the Navy still operating the F/A-18C "Legacy Hornet" will retire the aircraft this Friday, February 1st. The Legacy Hornets completed their last carrier deployment last year, and other units announced they were transitioning to the Super Hornet and F-35C. The F/A-18A+ will still serve as an aggressor, and the Blue Angel's will keep their Legacy Hornets until they transition to super Hornets. The USMC will also continue flying Legacy Hornets for the time being.

I guess I'm surprised this is happening so soon. The announcement just seems very sudden, and it doesn't look like we'll get a "final demo" from the team either. I'm gonna miss hearing this plane's engines winding up at shows.

There was talk of a final demo at Oceana last year, and I almost went because of it. Ultimately didn't.

At that time it was pretty out of the blue for me also, just seems weird that they've been so phased out. As you said they'll still be around for a while yet, just not in active duty squadrons.

As the saying goes, the end is inevitable.
