Dredging up this topic to add my .02 on an ND filter I tried this weekend, plus it's been a while since there's been activity on it so feel free to add your current setup - or if you've added some sort of game-changing gear!

I've been thinking about the quoted question above regarding an ND filter for the last year or so - I remember reading it the first time and thinking that I wouldn't really have a need for that.

Last season though I started trying to get my shutter speed down for props & takeoff/landing, both as a challenge and to try to figure out what I like best. That has resulted in apertures in the f/18-f/30 range, shooting in the 1/30-1/125ish second range (1/80 is where I'm usually at and adjust from there as needed). Ahead of the TBM Reunion I decided to rent a variable ND filter for the heck of it, for my 60-600 lens and this is what I ended up with -

105mm Aurora Aperture Power XND Mark II Variable ND, 1-7 stops

It will be quite a while before I'm able to go through my photos from the weekend closely, but spot-checking a handful I'm happy with the results! I was able to easily get the aperture down to the f/6.3-f/11 range. I didn't monkey around with it much after I got it set so it did get smaller than that at times but not often. I didn't see any image quality issues. I thought it would be a pain to adjust between props & jets for example, but it has a little lever and hard stops at min & max that made it easy to adjust without taking the hood off or even taking the camera away from my eye. I will likely add it to my bag for future shows.

Here is what I'm currently shooting with!

For my bare-bones kit:
Nikon D500
Sigma 60-600 f4.5-6.3
Nikon 16-80 f2.8-f4

For night shows, I add Nikon 70-200 f2.8

I've recently replaced my D5300 with a Z6II so for static night shoots or shows where I can easily bring a 2nd body,

Nikon Z6II
Nikon 24-120 f4
Nikon 14-30 f4
