Re: Exposure Compensation

I wrote an article for the RC crowd a few years ago discussing EC & prop blur. Full scale is a bit different because you won't have as much sky in the shot & the shutter speeds for props or heli rotors need to be much slower but it may offer some ideas. I wrote a similar article for Model Av...

Re: Snowbird Crash in Atlanta

A friend's daughter was the tech for Number 5 a couple of years ago. She'll be quite concerned about this and for the record it's the Royal Canadian Air Force and my father served a full career with it retiring in 1968. Around that time it became the Canadian Armed Forces which finally was changed b...

Re: What Photo/Video Gear Do You Use?

I agree with Ryan. Mode 1 (if the lens has modes) is for stationary targets & Mode 2 is for panning. In theory that means side to side panning but to date I've never had any issues when panning at considerable angles going upwards or downwards while also panning side to side. (as in tracking an ...

Re: First Airshow and a beginner. What should I use and tips?

As you can see we have different opinions on what works which shouldn't be a surprise. I use Exposure Compensation heavily but if you shoot RAW it's less important than if you only shoot jpg's. I shoot both & because I try to edit & have an event album on line by Tuesday right after the even...

Re: First Airshow and a beginner. What should I use and tips?

You can practice panning at the side of a busy road or anywhere things go by at a bit of speed. You can even do it where bicycles get driven a lot. You just need to get the hang of trying to keep the moving target in place in your viewfinder. The slower your shutter speed the more important that is ...

Re: First Airshow and a beginner. What should I use and tips?

I'm old & panning is my greatest asset now. Panning smoothly is much easier for me that taking stills. I can barely hold a long lens well enough to shoot at any slower shutter speed even with image stabilization. Also be sure you understand Exposure Compensation & how to change it quickly. H...

Re: First Airshow and a beginner. What should I use and tips?

Start by reading this so as to understand what sets good photos apart from great ones. https://www.airshowstuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=99 But keeping that in mind since it's a new adventure for you work your way down to the lower shutter speeds as you get the hang of it. Pan with the pla...

Re: RAF Red Arrows announce 2019 North American Tour

My photo album is now on line and I have to admit to being quite lucky when it came to the crossovers. I had watched a video of their 2019 performance at RIAT trying to get a feel for the routing & to know which plane to pan with on the crossovers. Unfortunately the video wasn't clear enough to ...

Re: Essential RC 4K video

I watched the dual act video just before leaving to see the Red Arrows (1st card is downloading now). They looked very impressive & must have practiced that routine. It was a great performance but I doubt anything like that will be allowed here in Canada.
