Hello,
I'm a regular at the Nellis Air Shows and planning start going to "Star Wars Canyon" (haven't been there yet). So, I'm new to the Nellis Red Flag days and want to start photographing the aircraft. I'm familiar with the prime locations to photograph the aircraft outside of Nellis base. What time (morning, noon, evenings) should I be there when they take-off for Red Day? Not sure how the whole Red Flag exercise happens. Do they take-off in the morning, fly to the Nellis Range (where ever that's at) and return to base? Do they do this between Jan 26 - Feb16, 2018 and the other dates?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Mike

Looks like an RAAF EA-18G Growler crashed on takeoff this morning. :( No major injuries.

Update: this second article has better pictures, and from the looks of it, the Growler never got off the ground. It caught fire on take off, but was structurally intact and came to a stop. The pilots managed to get out without ejecting as previously reported. They’re currently assessing whether or not they will have to write it off.

Hi everyone, im new to the Site my name is Mike. I shoot mostly motorsports. During our many trips to LV, we have made a habit of sitting outside LVMS watching the jets. I have been to a Red Flag in 2015 and 2016. I planned on going last year but a family emergency prevented that. Hopefully we will be there again in a week. Plans are made as long as nothing goes wrong. Fingers crossed.

Hi Mike, my name is Michael.
I've never been to a Red Flag. I'd like to check it out. Do have any tips on location, time of day? Also, see my earlier post.

Thanks!
Michael

Howdy Michael,

I've been to RF once recently, and if you're familiar with the spotting locations on Cheyenne and along the Speedway, you'll be set for spots. I do remember that going over to Nellis Meadows Park also afforded some nice shots.

As for times, looking back over my shots, they started as early as 0830 and went into the afternoon. Activity typically doesn't stop for long in that chunk of time. A lot of aircraft going and coming back.

As for the dates, I don't know about this current flag.

Hope that helps, bud! I hope you have a great time there. I look forward to seeing your shots in the thread!

Fair winds,
Anthony
