My top 5 displays were:
1. Slovenian PC-9, That guy deserves a keg of beer for getting the absolute maximum out of his aircraft....WOW. That outside loop is utterly insane.
2. Finnish F-18. They've officially perfected the F-18 display, it's so well choreographed and flown to the limits.
3. Couteau Delta. All the French displays were outstanding but they were a cut above. M2000D is just a sexy machine.
4. SU-27...Because it's an SU-27. Enough said. They're tailsliding an aircraft roughly the size of a B-25.
5. Frecce Tricolori. Again...Choreography and uniqueness of maneuvers. Having a 10th aircraft up there keeps it entertaining the entire time.

Bottom 5 Displays (and go easy on me here because I enjoyed each display but these had issues)
5. Patrila Aguila- I liked it but agreed with the rest of you its about 8-9 minutes too long.
4. RAF Chinook- What happened to this? Compared to the 2013 display it seemed EXTREMELY tame. Also their run-in for display is frankly bizarre.
3. Belgian A-109 display...Shoulda bought binoculars to find the thing..and same as the Chinook being really watered down. New rules for helicopters this year?
2. CF-18...UK show rules really hamper this display, which I have some questions about below. (Plus I've seen it so much it's nothing new for me)
1. BBMF. I may draw some fire for this one but this was the most disappointing display for me for several reasons. I found the passes to be quite high and far away. This goes to my questioning below but I felt like they weren't entirely sure where the display lines were. Maybe us in North America are spoiled with a non-aerobatic 500 foot display line but c'mon! 95% of the BBMF passes are non-aerobatic and they cant get a bit closer?? I heard quite a few comments in the viewing village about why they were so far away. I appreciate its the RAF100 show so they're gonna draw favour from the Awards committee, but Best overall flying display!!!???? What!!!!??? To me it also seemed a bit of a disorganised display as well with aircraft going south to hold while another one performs fairly lackadaisical passes. If you're not doing aerobatic passes get your planes in the showbox!!! The C-47 just lands after a few formation passes with little fanfare or acknowledgement? The 7-ship formation is amazing but then the Hurricane seemed to disappear for the majority of the display. I appreciate that these aircraft are national treasures and all, but I feel like this display could've been far better choreographed. It strikes me as "We're flying the coolest old aircraft so we don't have to try" kind of display.

Two years ago the Chinook display team was pulled mid-season as the routine apparently caused airframe fatigue. It came back in 2017 and while I can't tell much of a difference (I never paid it much attention pre-2016) there is a general concensus that it's not as dynamic as it used to be.

I agree with 9/10 of the items on your list, but...

Fair enough, it won't be for everyone, although I thought their display was utterly superb and worthy of one of the top awards. But some of that criticism is a little unfair, particularly the part about the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes were not intended to be part of the Trenchard display, remember. The 7-ship formation was supposed to be on Friday as part of the RAF100 flypast only. Unfortunately, weather cancelled the flypast, and with it, the much-touted "Trenchard Plus" formation it was due to contain. So, the BBMF in a rare moment of spectator-focussed flexibility, decided to launch three extra aircraft ahead of the standard Trenchard display on Saturday and open it with the 7-ship pass we had been due to see the day before. Then, the extra aircraft peeled away into the hold and the standard display continued as per the original plan. There was never intended to be a full 7-ship display, so the decision to launch the Hurricanes and extra Spitfire to give us two 7-ship formation passes should be applauded, not bemoaned because the aircraft that weren't supposed to be there "seemed to disappear".

On an unrelated note, I am currently working on a narrated video report featuring every aircraft that flew at the show, with cockpit footage from a good number of them. Some videos will also be appearing on AirshowStuff's channel shortly.

I see Ryan is steadily uploading some of my RIAT short videos (see below) with two more to come! The release of my longer film was unfortunately delayed while I resolved a last-minute issue with the show organisers, but I've been working flat out to get everything ready to go and they've been very helpful indeed. New target date is the afternoon of Wednesday 22nd!

Well without going into detail, the show are fine with people making videos like mine as long as it doesn't affect their other commercial and charitable activities, such as the official DVD. We were just talking through a couple of ways to make sure I'm working to both our advantages and not affecting that side of their operations. We actually resolved things pretty quickly but my slow rural wifi just makes a re-upload so slow that Wednesday was the next date I could realistically hope to have it ready by.

Well DBH really have no reason to worry about my little production. This is their gob-smackingly good official DVD trailer, which was released yesterday. I love what they've done with the commentary, I must find a way to do the same. I maintain a lot of my earlier criticism of the show, but watching that video, it's pretty much impossible to argue with the closing line: "This is the greatest airshow on earth".

I'm publishing my version in a little under 3 hours: http://thisisflight.net/2018/08/16/90-m ... y-airshow/
