2018 EAA Skiplane Fly-In (Oshkosh, WI)

I guess I forgot to post here about this event ahead of time, but yesterday was EAA's skiplane fly-in. For a few hours they open Pioneer Airport (located on the EAA Museum grounds) to skiplanes and invite the public to come see them and get some free food. The event is always pretty laid back with no fences or anything; you pretty much just mill about and don't get hit by an airplane.

In previous years it was really cool to actually go to the other side of the runway from the crowd area and stand on snow piles immediately next to the runway. I got some great photo ops and the sun was at your back. This year, they apparently decided they didn't want people standing so close so they had a security truck blocking off that entire parking lot unless you had prior permission to be there. Luckily the guy was nice and when I explained what I was shooting he said I could park but just not to go too far out. No worries there, I actually climbed a big snow pile further back from the runway to get a better view.

After a bunch of landings and a VERY sketchy close call with a near mid-air on short final (it's in the video) I walked around to the main event to see the aircraft up close for a bit, then went back to catch the takeoffs from the good side. It was a good time despite temperatures in the teens!
