I understand it's their show and they can make whatever rules they want, but I wish they'd explain WHY. Of all the shows that have done this not ONE has been able to put forth a reason.

Has there been a direct threat using camera equipment? Have there been injuries from people getting hit in the head by long lenses? It just seems to random and unnecessary...and in the long run sours the experience for the people most likely to spend money on extras, attend the full weekend, etc.
It's likely a security issue. They don't want information about the aircraft (wing numbers, pilot names, etc) entering public circulation. It ultimately puts the aircraft and the people that fly them in danger of attack. It may sound far fetched, but I got a similar story when I went to Cherry Point this year. In the case of hangared aircraft, if they have the plane opened up for work, there is likely secret information or hardware inside that can't been seen by the public. They had an F-35C in a hangar the last time I went. I know it seems like bs, but they won't risk putting information in the hands of people who want to do harm.

This is a weak "catch all" at best. A flat out lie at worst. Aircraft information...that could be easily captured by sitting along the arrival flight path the week of the show? That information? Let alone the announcers will tell everyone unit numbers and pilot names of anyone that performs in the show.

Then if they have a jet open with "secret" information inside the hangar shouldn't be open...period. It doesn't take much to properly secure the facility for a known event (airshow weekend).

The sad part is, if they told everyone the REAL reason behind the ban I'm sure 99% would accept it without issue. Instead, they're going all secret squirrel and alienating some of their largest supporters. I guarantee some attendees saw photos, taken with the same equipment they're restricting, and decided to attend the show. Take those photos away and you're turning away potential customers before they even arrive at the gate.

Yes, this "secret" hardware inside an open panel on a jet in a dark hangar 500 feet away  . Sounds like excessive paranoia to me. The really secret stuff is not photographable. That includes avionics, software, capabilities, aircrew proficiency and experience, etc. There isn't any information one would get from photographing an avionics box.

Anyone have any idea how long it takes to get your "Jet Fan Pass" approval? I jumped through less hoops for media credentials for shows compared to what I filled out for this lens "Pass".

From the NAS Oceana Facebook page this morning:

As many of you have seen and heard, Hurrican Florence will be arriving on the eastern shore on Thursday. At this time, we foresee no alteration, delay or cancellation of the Air Show due to the weather.
