International Sanicole Airshow, Belgium - 13th & 15th September

Post by Flightline Uk » Mon Jan 21, 2019 12:20 pm

If you want to do a European airshow with a difference and a slight American twist then the Sanicole weekend could be for you - particularly if you fancy taking in some of Europe's other big airshows like Airpower at Zeltweg the week before or Duxford/Ostrava/Athens the week after! Belgium is a great country to visit if only for the great beer and chocolate! The show is close to a number of great cities to visit for a weekend break too.

The show is about an 60-90 minute drive from Brussels or Eindhoven. Much of the event is inspired by what Geoffrey and Gilbert Buekenberghs have seen from shows in the states, particularly the opening Sunset show. A further slice of North America comes in the form of the announcers will Ric Peterson providing the English language commentary alongside the local Flemish commentator Chris Christiaens.

Held at a small aeroclub between the towns of Leopoldsburg and Hetchel, the line-up for this show is a heady mix of military and civilian displays from across Europe and beyond. Most acts (if not all this year) operate from near-by Kleine Brogel Air Base which often hosts a spotters day during the Saturday allowing visitors an up close view of participating aircraft while the aeroclub prepares for the full show day on the Sunday. There's usually a small static display and various exhibitions in the aeroclub hangars.

The opening Friday sees the Sunset show which is a 3-4 hour display featuring some of the international acts from the main show alongside a mix of European based pyrotechnic display acts flying the evening twilight.

Saturday is a "rest" day with closed rehearsals. However, as mentioned above Kleine Brogel is open for its spotterday event from which you can see the airshow aircraft close up and sometimes watch further dipslays from the Belgian Air Force. Click Here for a link with some images from the last event.

Sunday sees the main event with an eight hour flying display. There's always strong support from international fast jets and national display teams, but civilian and warbird acts get equally billing too.

Announcements on the line-up will start very soon - keep an eye on http://www.sanicole.com for more

Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress 'Sally-B' will be headlining a gathering of warbirds at this year's Sanicole Airshow as the event commemorates the 75th Anniversary of the Normandy Landings and the start of European liberation.

Also, German Army Aviation intend to participate at the event with a rare solo display outside of Germany from a Eurocopter EC135.
