61st Annual City of Chicago Air & Water Show (2019)
I can tell you the 300mm lens will be a bit tough. Maybe for the formation stuff it'll be ok, but for solo jets they're pretty far out there for the most part (if you're at show center on the beach at least). The suns will be at your back the later the day gets but it can get hazy and the sun a bit harsh. that being said you can definitely get some good stuff just not the easiest place to shoot.
I may go to Gary for a day to see what I can see or do there. Or maybe just call some friends and actually just enjoy the show from the beach. That's a novel idea. It is a massive beach party if the weather is nice.

I think 300mm probably won't be good enough for most of the flying. I shoot with the 100-400mm and 1.4x extender on a full frame and it is OK. Earlier years with the crop frame and 400mm I got decent stuff. But yea, minimum of 400mm is needed I think.Adambadger88 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 06, 2019 11:42 pm I am stoked to see this event, especially for the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team Red Arrows and this will be my first time I have gone to the Chicago Air & Water Show. I'm hoping a 70-300mm zoom will be plenty long for this event as I haven't been here before. Any pointers?

Less than a week away and the weather is looking good for the weekend. They are saying highs in the upper 80's and NO RAIN.

First time to this show in a few years for me. I'm borrowing a DSLR and lens from a friend and am actually going to try some aerial photography for a change. I know just enough to be dangerous, but probably not enough to get anything genuinely good so it should be interesting.
Looks like a great lineup and I hope the weather forecast holds. I'll be on North Avenue Beach early. If you get there before the show starts and see someone napping in a brown and gold Detroit Tigers cap, that'll be me. If anyone's around, feel free to come give me a kick and say hi. Hoping to stop by Gary for an early morning or late evening fence check on the way there or the way back as well.

Matt
If you can get there early I would encourage y'all to attend the Friday practice show (which is a full show for all teams) that has about 1/10 of the people.

I will also be on the beach on Friday. We usually set up right by the boat house close to the drop zone. I should have my camo hat with Vlado patch on the front and an American flag on the back.

I'll be there Friday. Look for me with a blue "Boeing" baseball hat.

Looks like GOOD MORNING AMERICA is going to be at North Ave beach Thursday. They have a TFR for the Leapfrogs and the Golden Knights for an early morning jump. From the Chicago Air & Water show page. Come to North Avenue Beach this Thursday early morning to be an audience member for the Good Morning America Summer Road Trip. Free but you need to sign up in advance.
There's no free parking around here so plan accordingly.

If anyone is planning on going to Gary airport it looks like they are charging $5 a person.
