I just watched my video and they said that the veteran in Brad Deckert's aircraft flew TBM's in the war.

Nice pics, and glad you got out onto the grass unlike last year!kalamazookid wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2019 10:31 pm I want to reiterate my compliments to the organizers and pilots for creating an event flexible enough to get most of the aircraft in the air before the weather closed in. In my experience, there aren't many events that would be able to take advantage of favorable weather before a traditional afternoon airshow. It's too bad the weather didn't allow more aircraft to attend, but they did the best they could with what they had. Well done to all involved.
Some TBM action. I didn't hear the story related to why the TBM got the firetruck treatment, but it looked like there was a veteran in the back seat. Honors for a final flight in the TBM?
Brad had a WWII TBM pilot in his back seat, hence the salute. The other TBM flying had a gentleman who flew in from Tokyo just to attend the event. I don't think he was a vet or anything, but they wanted to give him something for his troubles. Notice that he didn't get the same salute.
Very frustrating weekend. I agree completely that the earlier flying on Saturday was the saving grace for the event, and they got up whatever they could. Even some of the planes that left gave a flyby.
The Friday night run was awesome but a nightmare to shoot. I personally would have preferred no waivered night show because it just means a lot of extra BS with crowd lines and such. But if the weather had cooperated, it would have been a nice evening on the ramp. I was freezing my ass off in reality, lol. did anyone get good pics of the night run?
I really thought that the weather on Saturday would move through and we'd get some more flying in, but it just kept forming and running right over the airport. I saw a couple T-6s leaving this morning from the hotel, but it was still low-ish overcast.

I thought that was probably the case. When I arrived, the TBMs had just fired up so I walked immediately onto the ramp and then spent most of the rest of my time in the grass. Didn't catch anything on the PA until after they had taxied back in.
It was really nice to be able to be out in the grass during the flying. I hope that's something they plan to continue. I do wonder if they would have been as lenient if the weather hadn't been closing in though. The crowd line last year wasn't bad, but sitting in the grass is much more comfortable than being on hot concrete and it provides better opportunities for photos and views of takeoffs and landings, not to mention being closer to the action.
When I looked at the weather Saturday morning, I thought we'd be in the clear until mid-afternoon. Too bad the weather had to wreak havoc on aircraft traveling early and on Saturday. I know at least one TBM (and probably more) abandoned travel plans early Friday. Hopefully they'll have better luck next time around.
I'll keep going to this as long as they keep doing it.
