Airshow Action 2019 video series

Post by Adam » Thu Jul 09, 2020 7:45 pm

AirshowStuff and I have joined forces to produce a two-part video series on the best of the 2019 airshow season in Europe and North America! The first part, which is almost an hour long, will be released on AirshowStuff's YouTube channel this Saturday, and features the best of 2019's military action. Highlights include:
  • MAGTF Demo and Aggressor F-5s at Yuma
  • The F-22 and UH-60 at sunset at Goshen
  • The award-winning Finnish F-18, Frecce Tricolori, and Spanish Harrier displays at RIAT, among others
  • Four-ship USAF Heritage Flights at Oshkosh, and a rare appearance by an F-35C
  • A rare European appearance by the Saudi Hawks in Gdynia, and demos by the Su-22 and Su-27
  • The brand new T-7A Redhawk at the Spirit of St. Louis Airshow, and the Red Arrows on their North America tour
  • A great vantage point for a stunning sunset Eurocopter Tiger demonstration at Festa al Cel
  • The new F-35A Demo Team and the spectacular Combined Arms Demo at Aviation Nation
Ryan or I will post the link to the full programme soon, I'm sure, but in the mean time, here's a trailer! Part 2, focussing on warbird airshow action, is done and ready to go too, and will be published some time later on this year.

Among the footage presented in the video, one of my top favorites was the Polish Air Force Su-22 demo. I hope I make it out to the Radom Airshow in Poland next year and hopefully see this airplane fly. To my knowledge, the Su-22 along with the MiG-29 are due for retirement sometime during this decade.

The MiG-29s have 3-4 years before the Poles run out of parts and the Su-22s are due to be phased out in 2024. However, both fleets could be grounded at almost any time if any further incidents occur. I've been lucky to see the PoAF display each type, and I highly recommend both. Equally worth catching is the TS-11, which is due to be phased out next year. This will presumably herald the end of Bialo-Czerwone Iskry, as the replacement fleet of 16 M-346 Bieliks is probably too small to support a 6 or 7-ship aerobatic team in addition to training duties.

Forgot about the TS-11. Thanks for bringing that up. Would be nice to see Bialo-Czerwone Iskry before the planes retire. As for the MiG-29, I was very fortunate to see it fly at RIAT back in 2015, which was first time over there. Always fun to see the smoke pouring out the engines as it initiates its takeoff sequence.

Here's hoping that by August 2021 the COVID-19 situation won't be as severe.

I finally had some time to sit down and watch this. As with the previous collaboration on the Oshkosh video, this was a great combination of footage and narration! I particularly enjoyed the RIAT and AeroBaltic segments. It's always interesting to see how different militaries showcase each aircraft's ability in their own unique demonstrations. I'm going to have to make a trip to RIAT or another large military show in Europe a priority some day.

Looking forward to seeing the warbirds compilation. Great work!

RIAT is a lot of fun. Had the privilege to be out there twice (2015 [Last Year Of Last Flying Vulcun] and 2018 [RAF Centennial]). I know a couple of large European airshows I strongly recommend. One is AirPower in Zeltweg, Austria and the other is the Radom Airshow in Radom, Poland which is scheduled to take place August 28-29, 2021. Hopefully by then, the COVID-19 situation won't be as severe as it is right now.
