This excellent article contains the best indication yet of what could be in store for UK airshows over the next few years, following a BADA panel discussion: https://www.airshows.co.uk/features/202 ... -recovery/

Key points:
  • Emergency services are not currently in a position to support airshows, and without that support, they simply cannot happen. Some late season shows such as Duxford are hoping the situation will have changed by that point and some emergency services have already committed to support 2021 airshows.
  • The "general consensus" is that no airshow that cannot implement robust social distancing will go ahead in 2020 or 2021. There could be ways around this, such as "drive-in" shows.
  • The Red Arrows have resumed training with the aim of performing a few displays later in the season, although it may be a simplified display (presumably due to lost training time although they haven't explicitly mentioned that). Other RAF display teams are keen to perform also.
  • No international Red Arrows tours are planned for the next two seasons currently, although Red 10 said the team would do their best to ensure that if a tour is requested, it doesn't clash with their UK season as in 2019.
  • Display Authorisations which lapsed, or will lapse, between the start of the lockdown and the end of the display season, will be automatically extended until November. However, display practice requirements will be increased to account for lack of currency (GA flying was banned during the lockdown until this weekend)
  • However, challenges remain: GA flying must adhere to social distancing so people who do not live in the same household cannot fly together, and many airfields are shut and vital staff are not working. The revival of civilian air display acts is tied to the revival of GA more generally.
  • Panelists agreed that airshows will not return to normal until after an effective vaccine or treatment is found and implemented.
In short, it seems likely we'll be able to enjoy aerial displays of some sort this year, but probably no airshows in a format we'd recognise.
