Austrian Saab 105OË Demo Team Coming To An End

Post by n33d4sp33d_85 » Thu Jul 09, 2020 2:28 am

The end of the Austrian Saab 105OË demo team

In July 2017, the Austrian Defense Ministry announced that it would replace all their Eurofighter and Saab 105OË by the end of 2020 and replace them with a new airframe. However On the 6th of July 2020, the Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner announced that the Eurofighter EF2000s will remain in service for a while longer however the Saab J105OËs will be phased out and can only be used until the end of 2020. The aircraft will be officially retired in 2021 and the pilot training will be moved overseas.

Sadly the retirement of the Saab 105 means that Airpower19 was the last Airshow for the Saab 105OË Demo Team which will now be disbanded. The Saab 105OË Demo Team as it was unofficially known was a very popular act at the Airshows all across the Europe for a number of years. In 2019 Captain Christian Müller displayed the aircraft at numerous events going as far as Greece to take part in the Athens Flying Week 2019, the team was due to display at a number of events this year with the first display planned for may at the CROIMAS in Croatia.

Share your photos of the Austrian Saab 105 below as a thank you to all the pilots who over the years volunteered their free time to display this magnificent aircraft for us.

Farewell to the Austrian Saab 105!

This morning after 50 years of service the Austrian Air Force has officially retired the Saab 105OE after an unbelievable 156,517 flight hours and 254,000 missions! For this occasion, a single aircraft (BJ-40) has received it's last ever Golden "Tiger" livery with a big number 50 on its top side and the tailfin. Austrian Saab 105OE display team was a popular act at many airshows all around Europe and we will certainly miss seeing this unique jet on the skies once the airshow season starts!
