July 4th U.S. Military Flyovers

Post by NEAirMuseums » Tue Jun 30, 2020 2:10 am

Very interesting news!!
Secretary Esper has approved a Department of the Interior request for DOD support to the 2020 Salute to America. DOD will provide aerial, musical and ceremonial support to this year’s celebration in Washington, D.C. This year’s support will also include a flyover of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, as well an aerial salute to several cities that played roles in the American Revolution.

The highlight of this year’s celebration will be our salute to the Great Cities of the American Revolution. The flyovers will begin in Boston and proceed to New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore. From there they will join other Department of Defense and heritage aircraft in the Salute to America over our nation’s capital.

Among the aircraft will participate in the flyover in D.C. are the F-16s of the USAF Thunderbirds. Here's the article for more details.

Whiskey 7 is one of the warbirds flying over DC. I believe the various participants were told to keep it quiet, apparently until now.

This article says that the DC flyovers are scheduled between 6:45 and 8pm on the 4th. It also says the Blue Angels will be part of the flyovers but I still think they're going to stick to South Dakota and not try to cover both.
The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and historic aircraft including P-51s and B-29s are scheduled to fly over the National Mall and the District from around 6:45 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A fireworks display is set to begin at 9:07 p.m. It will be visible from three miles away, so you can watch from both D.C. and Northern Virginia, planners say.

Latest update from U.S. Northern Command:
The aircraft are scheduled to overfly each of the cities, beginning at approximately 4:00 pm, then fly on to the next city. U.S. Air Force and U.S. Marine Corps jets will fly over in five waves. The flyovers will be led by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, followed by B-1, B-2 and B-52 bombers, F-15 and F-22 fighters and U.S. Marine Corps F-35 fighters.

As part of our United We Fly! program this weekend, Commemorative Air Force B29 B24 Squadron's FIFI will be honoring our country’s independence by participating in the 2020 Salute to America Flyover at the National Mall in Washington DC!

The Independence Day Celebration in the Nation’s Capital will include multiple flight demonstrations from different branches of our military, in particular, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, and a monumental firework display. Military flyovers above the National Mall and across the District are scheduled for approximately 6:45 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
