80th Anniversary Battle Of Britain Airshow Weekned
Presented by: Duxford Airshows
IWM Duxford Aerodome
Cambridgeshire, UK
Website: https://www.iwm.org.uk/airshows/duxford ... in-airshow
(Future Dates TBA)

Cancellation Notice
It is with great sadness that we have taken the decision to cancel the Duxford Battle of Britain Proms and the 80th Anniversary Battle of Britain Air Show 2020. We were looking forward to the Air Show as much as the thousands of visitors who had bought tickets for what promised to be a brilliant weekend.

We have been working tirelessly with our partners including Public Health England and South Cambridgeshire District Council in order to explore all avenues for hosting the event. However, we take our responsibility for the safety of our visitors and local community very seriously and feel it would be irresponsible to continue with the event in this rapidly-changing climate.

We are devastated to have to take this decision, and want to thank our visitors, supporters, partners neighbours and staff members for their incredible support over the past few days and weeks. IWM, like many other museums across the country, is under significant financial pressure due to the coronavirus pandemic so it is a huge blow to have to cancel one of our biggest events less than a week before it takes place. We are confident that our visitors, partners and supporters understand we would not have taken lightly a decision of this magnitude.

We are hugely sorry about the disruption that this cancellation will cause for everyone. We will be in touch with everyone who has purchased a ticket to offer refunds and options to donate your ticket to IWM or consider membership opportunities with access to a host of benefits including free entry to all IWM sites and much more for a whole year.

We promise to return with a packed programme for our next Air Show season and will release details about our 2021 programme in due course.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support for IWM.

Imperial War Museusms
Duxford 80th Anniversary of Battle of Britian
Be part of this special three-day event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The Friday spectacular Duxford Battle of Britain Proms starts off the 80th anniversary Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show weekend, remembering the men, women and aircraft entwined with Summer 1940.

The 80th Anniversary Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show weekend is now a spectacular three-day event! In these unprecedented times, we will be capping attendance to our events this year to ensure the safety of all visitors, staff and volunteers. And so we have extended the commemorative weekend to allow more people to be part of it. The new Duxford Battle of Britain Proms on Friday 18 September will start off Air Show commemorations, filled with flying and entertainment, climaxing with sunset flypasts and an evening filled with music. Strictly limited tickets are on sale now.

Only 29 Days left!

This year’s socially distanced three-day Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show, including Friday’s new proms event, will combine nostalgic flying formations with contemporary, awe-inspiring aerobatic displays. Acts will include the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, a Spitfire Balbo, the Red Arrows and the Blades, as well as a unique appearance from the NHS Spitfire.

To mark 80 years since the RAF defeated the Luftwaffe in the 1940 aerial campaign, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will be showcasing a new Dowding formation with an Avro Lancaster, a Hawker Hurricane and three Supermarine Spitfires. The Aircraft Restoration Company’s Spitfire Mk.PRXI PL983 ‘L’, a former reconnaissance aircraft which has recently been touring the country’s hospitals in tribute to the NHS, will also be gracing the skies.

Phil Hood, Air Show Event Manager, IWM says: “We’ve been working tirelessly with the local authorities to ensure that we have all the measures in place to make this event COVID-secure and prioritise the safety of visitors, staff and volunteers. We encourage those attending to read our COVID-19 Response Page on our website which outlines all the operational measures in place including test and trace procedures, mandatory mask-wearing when indoors, the appointment of a designated Social Distance team and thorough cleaning in all areas.”

Hood continued, “We’re thrilled to be inviting old favourites back to the Battle of Britain Air Show, and to welcome more modern acts to the skies. Although this is a step away from our usual September format, we see this as an opportunity to support the aviation industry when most of the year’s air shows were sadly cancelled. We would also like to thank all of our flying partners at IWM Duxford for preparing their aircraft especially for the event, which we’re confident won’t disappoint!”

A Battle of Britain air show wouldn’t be complete without a re-enacted dog fight between a Hispano Buchón, Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfires. The flying schedule will feature three of the world’s four remaining Mark 1 Spitfires, including the Dunkirk evacuation veteran, the Spitfire N3200, and culminate with a traditional Spitfire Balbo.

At Friday’s Duxford Battle of Britain Proms, the De Havilland DH-9 E8894 will make a rare appearance following its discovery in an Indian fortress and remarkable restoration by the Historical Aircraft Collection. Other First World War-era aircraft include the Great War Display team, combining perfectly choreographed aerial battles with showstopping pyrotechnics.

For thrill-seeking visitors, the Blades promise to deliver a high-octane performance with close-formation aerobatics. On Friday only, air show favourites the AeroSuperBatic wingwalkers will showcase daring mid-air acrobatics and flying synchronisation, while the Fireflies Aerobatic Display team boast wingtip pyrotechnics and dazzling coloured LED lighting.

On the ground, visitors will be transported back to the 1940s with vintage fairground activities and market stalls, military vehicle displays, bunting workshops, flight line walks and plenty of music and dancing. Duxford Battle of Britain Proms will also host concerts by The D-Day Darlings and the Fly Boys.

Since reopening on 1 August, IWM Duxford has installed a number of social distancing and hygiene measures to ensure the safety of all visitors, staff and volunteers. Please visit IWM Duxford’s Coronavirus FAQs page on the IWM website, or watch the ‘Welcome back’ video on YouTube for more information.

Oh, our wonderful local press, to whom clicks are more important than answers. The only additional uncertainty is being kicked up by people jumping to conclusions and news sites on the hunt for easy hits. Yes, gatherings of more than six are to become illegal, but the previous limit was only 30 (and groups larger than six have generally been against government guidance too, the police just haven't had any powers to enforce it). Businesses and venues deemed Covid-secure have been, and will continue to be, exempt - as they have needed to be all summer.

IWM have already said on social media that their expectation is for the airshow to go ahead, which this article - written over a day after that statement, has cunningly ommited, in favour of persuing a pointless will-they-won't-they drama. I'll bet this is to build up uncertainty (or, as the journalist would probably describe it, "generate interest in the story") ahead of another article in a few days announcing all is well and the show's going ahead, so Cambs Live can get a second round of clicks out of the same non-story. Unfortunately, if my NCTJ training, and short time in a local newspaper office, has taught me anything, it's that this is precisely the kind of underhand tactic employed by our local press on a daily basis.
