LINEUP ANNOUNCEMENT!!
The CenterPoint Energy Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger just announced flyovers for THREE special military aircraft - the U.S. Marine Corp CH-53E Super Stallion, U.S. Army AH-64 Apache, and the U.S. Air Force E-3 Sentry (AWACS).
The Super Stallion and the Apache will conduct flybys both days. The AWACS will conduct a flyby on Sunday only.
Fast Facts:
→ USMC CH-53E Super Stallion: This heavy lifting helicopter can transport up to 55 troops or external loads of 36,000lbs. - the equivalent of three large elephants.
→ USA AH-64 Apache: This Army attack helicopter is used extensively in night operations. It is most recognized for its helmet-mounted display and gun targeting system that moves with the pilot’s head movement.
→ USAF E-3 Sentry: The AWACS is an airborne warning, command, and control system, easily recognized by the 30-foot-wide rotating radar dome on top. This is an all-altitude, all-weather surveillance aircraft that can fly roughly eight hours without refueling.
These three aircraft are joining an already stacked lineup set to take over the Dayton skies on July 30 and 31, at the Dayton International Airport. Tickets are on sale at www.daytonairshow.com.

Arriving late Weds night, recommendation's on a location to sit and plane watch on Thursday and Friday before the show? Was thinking of parking at the Flying -J @ 175 Northwoods Blvd, Vandalia, OH 45377

Back in the day we had a Friday party near the ticket booths to watch arrivals come in on the south runway. Haven't done that in a long time!
Last year there were about 20-30 of us set up there watching arrivals on 24L on Friday. It was a good time. I plan on doing the same this year.

If they’re landing 24s, I’m planning on going to the paved lot on the west side of Dixie Dr just north of the approach end on 24L. If they’re landing 6s, I have no idea.

If the wind is enough of a factor for the mil jets and they have to come in on 6R, there's a small pull off area at Peter's Pike and US40 here. You'd be on the good light side as well if this happened, although I feel it is sort of rare (I live 3 miles out directly under the approach for 6R). I do have fond memories of German Phantoms arriving via 6L, along with a bone around the same time one year back in the 90s.

If anything comes in on 6L, there are many spots along Concorde Drive to pull off, again, on the good light side. I watched parts of the practice show in that area last year and it was pretty decent. The sun will be coming down 6L / 24R right about the same time that the blues will practice, so I may then swing over to the north side along Dog Leg or even up on the other end off of Lightner.

Good luck to everyone out there spotting - hope you catch some great arrivals!

Had a fun time at the Dayton Airshow this past weekend. The performers ranging from the F-15 Eagles to the Blue Angels were spectacular. It was quite a treat to see an E-3 Sentry AWACS performing a series of flybys as this was my first time seeing an E-3 in-flight. My other highlights include the F-15 Eagles from the Louisiana Air National Guard and a joint helicopter display featuring the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation's AH-1 Cobra and a US Army AH-64 Apache. On Saturday the Blue Angels flew a modified high show; the one maneuver they couldn't do because of one patch of low clouds was the line-abreast loop; while on Sunday, the team flew a modified low/flat show. On the Saturday show, the team started off as a six-ship, however about midway through, the slot pilot experienced a technical issue which led to the team performing the delta portion of their show as a five-ship. It was still a great performance. Overall, a fun airshow with an awesome variety of performers and static displays. Stay tuned as I prepare to upload my videos from Dayton during the week.

Second year out at the show, and I had a blast. The flying lineup had an excellent variety, and the static lineup was spectacular even with several no-shows. This is the first time I've seen the full Blue Angels show with the Super Hornets, and seeing three different formations over the three days was super interesting. Friday was 1-6 all single seaters, Saturday had 3, 2, 7, 4 in the diamond (and as mentioned above, the 7 jet had something happen right before the delta passes, so they flew a five ship at the end), and Sunday had 1-6, with the 7 jet renumbered to 4 and in the slot position. Other than the Blues, highlights for me were definitely the AFSOC statics (especially the MC-130H Combat Talon II, with retirement imminent for those), the Golden Knights "failed chute" demo, the spectacular father-son Army heritage flight, and Bayou Militia F-15Cs.
My only complaint is that it took two full acts to get the post-wall of fire smoldering fully extinguished on Saturday, which made photographing a bit difficult. The CH-53 eventually finished it off with rotor wash, and Sunday had no issues as there was nothing left to burn. Something to keep in mind for next time!

Here's a look at the aircraft that were featured on static display at last weekend's show to start things off. This was in my opinion the best static display lineup I've seen in a while.
