Air Tattoo 2022 - Your FRIAT Membership
Dear FRIAT Member
I very much hope you are looking forward to watching the 2021 Virtual Air Tattoo next Saturday (17 July) which, once again, will be packed full of exciting aircraft-related news, views and features for you to enjoy. The Virtual Air Tattoo will also mark the launch of tickets for the 2022 airshow going on sale.
We remain hugely grateful to all of you for carrying over your FRIAT memberships to 2022, some from as far back as July/August 2019, it is however with regret that I must tell you that we are having to apply a price increase to your membership to meet the rising cost of staging the event next year. The result is that the cost of all FRIAT packages already purchased for 2020/2021 will each increase by £30 for RIAT 2022.
I understand that this decision will be met with disappointment, but I hope you will appreciate why we have had to do this. Price increases imposed by an events industry that is struggling to recover post-pandemic have resulted in the cost of grandstands, marquees, furniture, trackway and basic facilities rising considerably, and unsurprisingly these costs have been passed on to RAFCTE as the Event Organiser.
Of course, we are looking forward to welcoming you all back to the FRIAT Enclosure next year, but I appreciate that there may be some among you who are unable or unwilling to meet this additional cost. Of course, we respect whatever decision you make. Those of you who decide to pay the increase will have over two months to make the payment. Those who decide against will receive a full refund. The cost of any remaining 2022 FRIAT packages that are available will go up by £50 each compared to our original 2020 offer.
Once again, I am very sorry to have to contact you with this news, however, this is but one of several really difficult decisions we are having to make to secure the Air Tattoo's future following successive cancellations which have had a profound impact. Nevertheless, I remain grateful to you for your understanding and continued support as we continue to navigate through these challenging times.
You will receive an email in the next couple of days from our ticket system that will tell you how to proceed. Only the person that made the booking will receive this email so we would be grateful if you could liaise as required.
Kind regards
Paul Atherton
CEO, Royal International Air Tattoo

I can accept that two years of cancellation leads to a need to up the fees. They are decent to allow you to opt out for a refund.

In a fit of wild optimism I booked my hotel for the week this evening. Trying the double tree this year, rates are currently reasonable via trivago.

I'm sure there is no alternative but to increase ticket costs, although I do fear for the future of the event as a result. RIAT 2019 did not sell out. Since then, ticket prices have risen and average household income has fallen by circa 8% according to some preliminary studies.

It has been heartening to see how sensible the enthusiast community has been after these essential price hikes, but the question I think is whether the non-enthusiasts and families RIAT relies on will see it the same way. I will be buying a Saturday ticket this weekend to support the show and I sincerely hope that enough other people feel they can justify the expense - I do hope it's enough to keep the show sustainable.

RIAT 2022 will see us celebrating the United States Air Force's 75th Anniversary in spectacular style. In addition, our operational theme for next year will be 'Training the Next Generation Air Force' and we hope to see many exciting aircraft from around the world on display. Many of the world's Air Arms put the Royal International Air Tattoo at the top of their list when it comes to deciding where to demonstrate their aircraft's capabilities and the professionalism of their aircrew. We are looking forward to welcoming old and new friends to take part in our return in 2022.

For someone visiting from the states, do any of the RIAT regulars have recommendations on where to stay? Looks like Swindon or Oxford are the closest cities with various hotel options. We purchased Mach 3 FRIAT passes; can't wait to see this show finally!

If you won't have a car, you'll find it easiest by far to be in Swindon as that's where the buses go from. The chain hotels near the bus stations will sell out fast and charge high prices but I have found good AirBnB options at short notice.

If you do plan to have a car, then there's no reason to limit yourself to the bigger cities so you'll probably want to avoid central Swindon if you are budget conscious. If it were me (and I am a terrible cheapskate) then I would be looking for a budget chain hotel like a Travelodge or Premier Inn about 10-20 miles away. They are found on the outskirts of most reasonably-sized towns such as Swindon, Oxford, Cirencester, Chippenham, Didcot, Abingdon and Reading, and I have often stayed in the smaller ones for sub-£30 per night. Note the cheap budget hotel chains often don't show up on 3rd party sites, you have to use their websites directly.

If you want to stay somewhere nicer but pricier and make a holiday of it, then parts of the Cotswolds or North Wessex Downs are beautiful and commutable to Fairford. There are several small hotels and B&Bs in the centre of most of the historic towns - but it won't be cheap. I'm thinking places like Marlborough or Bourton.

For a pure aviation experience, on the other hand, camping is probably the way to go, if you can stomach it and get your hands on some equipment.

Thanks Adam! That's very helpful info! It's good to know there are quite a few options out there. We plan to fly into London, spend a couple days there and then ride the train out to Abingdon/Swindon and rent a car once there. I'm not too confident on my first-ever right hand driving experience taking place in downtown London :-).

My brother and I have wanted to see this show since we were kids, and this will be our first visit. Hope to see you all there.
