USAF Heritage Flight Flyover-Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles
To elaborate, the flyover will be a special five-ship formation with a P-51 Mustang (likely Wee Willy II) leading all four of the single-ship demo teams. To my knowledge this formation has never been seen in public and was only flown during the Heritage Flight Conference in 2018 as a photo op.
For spotters who may be interested, the aircraft will be staging out of Los Alamitos Army Airfield and media flights are planned for Feb 10th. I assume there will be further practices and media flights on the 11th and 12th before the flyover on the 13th.

Hello, does anyone know good spotting locations for this event? I'm trying to catch these birds flying out of Los Alamitos on the 12th or 10th. Thanks!
Edit: If anyone has the time (or estimate) of their departure, it would be great.

Ok, this one has bothered me for some time. Every time I have seen a heritage flight with an A-10 the WW2 counterpart has always been a P-51. The official 'nickname' of the A-10 is Thunderbolt II, the P-47 was the original Thunderbolt. The A-10 is a ground support aircraft, the P-47 was used heavily in a ground support role. One of the unofficial names for the P-47 by pilots was "Hog", the unofficial nickname for the A -10 is "WartHog". How about paring the two planes up since literally the A -10 was named in honor of the P-47?

Well, kick off is 3:30 PT so I'd say the flyover will be right before that so 3:15-3:20? Just keep working backwards. I'd Imagine they'll be airborne and circling for a bit before the flyover. I'd wager they take off 2:45. I'd say getting to the airport at least an hour before the flyover?

If $$$, pilots and aircraft were unlimited I'm sure they would.hype wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 2:21 pm Ok, this one has bothered me for some time. Sadly they usually just have to go with what available and around. With the limited number of airworthy P-47s and even more limited HF certified P-47 pilots it sadly just doesn't happen much. Places like Oshkosh and the Heritage Flight Conference are the places most likely to see the flights like this just because all the pilots and aircraft are in one place. Mustangs, and willing Mustang owner and pilots are all over the place in comparison.

I would guess even earlier than that. I can see them taking off an hour before the flyover, potentially.RFDGuy wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 2:26 pmWell, kick off is 3:30 PT so I'd say the flyover will be right before that so 3:15-3:20? For media day, I expect there will be numerous F-16 flights to give rides to VIPs and such. Not sure how much actual practicing they will do.
I will certainly post if I hear any specific info!

Cockpit video from the F-22 of a five-ship practice flight this week. Interesting to see they did not bring Venom, just a gray F-16.

Steve Hinton will be the P-51 pilot for the 5-ship flyover. It will be Steve's final flight in the Heritage Flight program.
Steve Hinton will be piloting the P-51D “Wee Willy II” in the Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation flyover of the Super Bowl on Sunday along with all four of the Air Combat Command Aerial Events single ship demo assets: U.S. Air Force F-35A Lightning II Demonstration Team F-22 Raptor Demo Team F-16 Viper Demo Team and the A-10C Thunderbolt II Demonstration Team

Oh wow, I did not realize this was the case. That is awful news! He is so important to bringing variety to the warbirds. They are SO selective about who gets to fly in the program that things have gotten pretty stale. I really hope they can work to induct some new pilots with varied aircraft ratings to keep things going...n33d4sp33d_85 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 12, 2022 1:39 am Steve Hinton will be the P-51 pilot for the 5-ship flyover.
