Commander Steven 'Vrieske' De Vries will take over as the Belgian Air Force F-16 Demo Pilot for the 2022 Display Season

Meet Captain Steven “Vrieske” De Vries, the new demo pilot for the Belgian Air Force F-16 Solo Display Team.

Captain Steven “Vrieske” De Vries, the new demo pilot for the Belgian Air Force F-16 solo display, began his training flights over the Kleine Brogel Air Base in preparation for the upcoming Airshow season.

Although Vrieske began his initial training a few weeks ago, designing and perfecting his routine in the flight simulator, it wasn’t until this week that he performed the first demo practice in the real F-16. The first demo practice with a minimum altitude of 5.000 feet took place on Monday the 17th of January, since then Vrieske performed a number of training flights and went down to 3,000 feet. For the next few weeks, he will continue to practice his routine and slowly go lower to progressively descent to 500 feet, the Airshow minima.

Vrieske designed the all-new display routine which will last for around 10 minutes and definitely this will be the demo you don't wanna miss this summer with both the pilot and the aircraft pushed to the limits.

Senior Captain Steven “Vrieske” De Vries, the new demo pilot for the Belgian Air Force F-16 Solo Display using the specially painted F-16 the X tiger for his practice display today.

This was the very first-time Vrieske has used the smoke winders during his practice display as he continues to polish his display at 1500ft before moving down to 500 feet, the Airshow minima soon.

Today Senior Captain Steven “Vrieske” De Vries, the new demo pilot for the Belgian Air Force F-16 Solo Display Team performed his first training flight at 500 feet, the Airshow minima once again using the stunning X-Tiger.
Not long before he will showcase his skills at the European Airshows, this is definitely a display you don't wanna miss this year!

This year's display looks truly excellent, with a lot of negative-G flying. An outside turn and even a negative-G split-S are among the highlights.

This assumes wind is blowing from the left, obviously the whole thing could be reversed, but the sequence is:
Take off, reposition onto left 45
On-crowd high alpha barrel roll on left 45, high G turn to exit right 45, vertical turn manoeuvre
Approach from right, pull to vertical exit to crowd front, inverted; negative-G push into positive-G split-S
Approach show center; aileron roll, pull to vertical for vertical turn manoeuvre, departing on left 45 with spiral descent
Approach from left, 45 degree climb to altitude, and negative-G split-S into right to left inverted pass
Half Cuban to approach from left, 45 degree climb, negative-G bunt and outside turn to depart inverted right 45, split-S to arrive on right 45
Aileron roll, 420-degree high-G turn to depart left 45; loaded barrel roll
Left to right 4-point hesitation roll
Approach show centre for vertical climb and spiral descent
Right to left slow speed, high alpha pass, then high-alpha turn to depart left 45 for oblique quarterclover to depart left for loaded roll
Left to right topside pass/fast pass into loop and half cuban to land
