98 years ago today:
Today is the anniversary of one of the oddest-looking aircraft of the period between the wars, the Vickers Victoria, which had its first flight #OTD in 1922. This military transport had an open cockpit at the nose, but a large enclosed fuselage. The Victoria could carry up to 7,000 pounds of fuel and cargo! Not bad for 1922, right? Nearly 100 were built, but we're guessing at least half of you had never heard of it before... are we right?

45 years ago today, the McDonnell Douglas YC-15 flew for the first time. The YC-15 was McDonnell Douglas' entrant in the US Air Force's Advanced Medium STOL Transport (AMST) competition. Even though both the YC-15 and Boeing's entrant, the YC-14 were never ordered into production due to the cancellation of the AMST program, the YC-15's basic design would be used to form the C-17 Globemaster III.

16 years ago today, the BAE Systems Nimrod MRA4 flew for the first time. It was meant to serve as a replacement for its predecessor, the original Nimrod. However, significant delays caused by cost overruns and contract re-negotiations led to it's cancellation in 2010.
