67 years ago today the Convair R3Y Tradewind flew for the first time.
Another lesser-known aircraft, the Convair R3Y Tradewind, took its first flight #OTD in 1954. Eleven of the turboprop seaplanes were built though they only served with the US Navy for two years. The R3Y set a transcontinental seaplane record of 403 mph in 1954 by taking advantage of the high-altitude jetstream. This record still stands. After service trials, the aircraft were delivered to US Navy transport squadron VR-2 in March 1956. Problems with the engine/propeller combination led to cancellation of Tradewind operations and the unit was disbanded in April 1958. Had you ever heard of the Tradewind?
