80 years ago today:
#OTD in 1941, the Avro Manchester bomber makes its combat debut in a Royal Air Force Bomber Command raid on Brest, France overnight. The Manchester was widely regarded as an operational failure, primarily as a result of its Rolls-Royce Vulture engines which were underdeveloped, underpowered, and unreliable. However, the Manchester was redesigned into a four-engined heavy bomber, powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin engines. Can you name it?

It's a milestone in US Navy aircraft carrier operations, as it was #OTD in 1933 that the USS Ranger (CV-4), the US Navy's first ship designed from the outset as an aircraft carrier, is launched. By the time WWII began, Ranger was deemed too slow for use with the Pacific Fleet's carrier task forces against Japan, so the ship spent most of the war in the Atlantic, seeing combat there and provided air support for Operation Torch. In October 1943, she also fought in Operation Leader which involved air attacks on German shipping off Norway. She was one of only three American carriers to survive the US' involvement in WWII from its beginning in 1941, to its end in 1945. Can you name the other two?

#OTD in 1942, luxurious Boeing Stratoliners are stripped down and impressed into military service as C-75 Stratoliner Transports. Their first flights carry antitank ammunition and medical supplies to British forces in Libya. The Stratoliner was itself based on the B-17C airframe. Can you see the resemblance?
