76 years ago today:
https://www.facebook.com/CommemorativeA ... &__tn__=-RHere's another aircraft you may never had heard of: the Boeing XF8B, which first flew #OTD in 1944. It was designed to be a long-range carrier fighter for the US Navy with the ability to operate against the Japanese home islands from aircraft carriers outside the range of Japanese land-based aircraft.
The innovative design could serve as interceptor, long-range escort, dive-bomber, and torpedo bomber. But despite its formidable capabilities, the XF8B never entered production. With changing post-war strategy and the introduction of jet aircraft, the Navy cut its order so low that Boeing simply cancelled the program.
The XF8B would be the last fighter Boeing designed for the US Navy. While Boeing today owns the F/A-18 Hornet program, the Hornet was designed by a different company... do you remember which?

91 years ago today:
https://www.facebook.com/CommemorativeA ... &__tn__=-RIt was #OTD in 1929 that pioneering American aviator Commander Richard Byrd and crew set-off to make the first flight over the South Pole in a Ford 4-AT Trimotor. They would pass over the pole on November 29, wit the whole round trip taking some 19 hours! Is there anyone out there who can say they've been to Antarctica? Tell us the story!
