On this day 73 years ago, the B-45 Tornado flew for the first time.
Good morning Avgeekery Nation! Our eye opener this Tuesday morning is the North American B-45 Tornado bomber- first flown on this date in 1947. B-45s were modified to carry nukes and cameras, but all 143 airframes were retired by 1959. Look for an in-depth piece about the B-45 coming soon to Avgeekery.com

9 years ago today, the V-22 Osprey performed its first search & rescue mission of a downed aircrew member.
Eye opener: The Bell-Boeing MV-22 Osprey performed its first rescue of a downed aircrew member on this date in 2011, when Marine Corps MV-22s from the assault carrier USS Kearsarge (LHD-3) picked up USAF Major Kenneth Harney after he was forced to eject from his F-15E Strike Eagle. Harney's WSO, Captain Tyler Stark, was hidden by rebels until he could be retrieved separately.
