44 years ago today:
on this date in 1976 the first Sikorsky YUH-60A prototype to fly made an emergency landing in a wooded area with 14 Army troops aboard. The main rotor cut down 40 pines up to five inches in diameter but the main rotor blades did not shatter and the passengers and crew were unhurt. After repairs the rotorcraft was flown out of the clearing it created three days later. The Army, duly impressed by the toughness of the rotorcaft, awarded the contract for the UTTAS (Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System) to Sikorsky.

#OTD in 1944, Seventh Air Force B-24 Liberators launching from Saipan conduct the first bombing raid against Iwo Jima. There would be 10 more such raids in August alone. The naval bombardments and air raids against Iwo Jima would become the longest and most intense in the Pacific theater and would go on for nine months before the Allies finally moved to take the island. Do you know on what date the Allies first landed troops on Iwo Jima?
