77 years ago today:
#OTD in 1943, a two-day raid began on Wake Island by the The Fast Carrier Task Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet. At the time, the force of three fleet carriers and three light carriers is the largest force of American carriers ever assembled. Their aircraft make six strikes totaling 738 sorties, destroying 22 of the 34 Japanese aircraft on the island as well as many other structures on Wake.
It is also the first time a U.S. Navy submarine, USS Skate (SS-305), is assigned to support the raid by performing “lifeguard” duties for aviators downed at sea during the strike. The sub rescued four fliers. Submarine “lifeguarding” will become a regular feature of future raids.
