Greek Spitfire news!

On 19 January 2020, Vickers Supermarine Spitfire LF.IX MJ755 (construction number CBAF-IX-1285) has made its first post-restoration flight at Biggin Hill (UK). During this flight well-known warbird pilot Peter Kynsey was at the controls of the Spit.

The restoration was carried out by the local Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar. The fighter originates from the Hellenic Air Force which withdrew it from service in 1953, after which it was stored and later displayed at Tatoi airbase. Since 1992 the aircraft has been on static display at the Hellenic Air Force museum in Athens. Since 2007 the Hellenic Air Force performed the initial phases of the fighter’s restoration to flying condition. For the final phase of the restoration, MJ755 arrived at Biggin Hill on 23 March 2018. The fighter is finished in its original Hellenic Air Force colours with code "F-H", which makes a nice change after all the RAF Spitfires coming out of the BHHH workshop.

On 1 July 2019, the new Greek Spitfire was registered in the British register as G-CLGS. The registered owner of the aircraft is the Icarus Foundation of Pireaus, Greece. The Merlin engine of Spitfire MJ755 was run for the first time on 23 December 2019.
