Royal Navy Historic Flight aircraft find new home

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is giving away GBP1.8 million worth of iconic aircraft that formed part of the Royal Navy Historic Flight (RNHF) unit. Based at RNAS Yeovilton, the RNHF - which was formed in 1972 - was disbanded in March 2019. Now four (and possibly even five) of the RNHF's historically important aircraft will be donated to a civilian charity: the Fly Navy Heritage Trust Ltd (FNHT).

According to the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Defence, James Heappey: "The move will allow that these important aircraft continue to be used in support of commemorative and educational aims in support of the Royal Navy and Fleet Air Arm for many years to come". On top of that it will save money and improve their operational freedom.

The four aircraft involved are:
Fairey Swordfish W5856,
Hawker Sea Fury VR930,
Hawker Sea Hawk WV908 and
DHC-1 Chipmunk WK608
The future of a fifth aircraft, Swordfish LS326, is currently under consideration.

The aircraft's new owner is the Fly Navy Heritage Trust Ltd (FNHT). This charity preserves Britain’s great naval aviation heritage and runs Navy Wings. Navy Wings is an organisation which restores, maintains and flies a collection of historic aircraft, displayed to over three million people annually. The aircraft attend air shows and events all over the UK.
