Polish Navy To Replace SH-2G Seasprite

Polish Navy Seasprite replacement programme

The Lotnictwo Marynarki Wojennej (LMW, Polish Navy) has started a programme to replace its four Kaman SH-2G Seasprites ship-based helicopters. The helicopters are operated by the 43 Baza Lotnictwa Morskiego (43BLM) and are shore-based at Gdynia/Babie Doly.

The high level of wear causes low availability and readiness of the Seaprite helicopters. Taken into account there is also a lack of maintenance support provided by the manufacturer, the Polish Navy decided to replace the helicopters. Within the replacement programme, named 'Kondor Embarked Helicopter Programme', the Polish Navy seeks four to eight new helicopters for ASW/RWC duties (Anti-Submarine Warfare/Radar Weapons Control), which is the most urgent at this moment. Next to the current Seasprites, this role is also fulfilled by the Mil Mi-14.

Further in time, the Polish Navy is also looking forward to acquire eight CSAR helicopters for the special operations component.

According to information from the Polish Ministry of Defence (MoD), there are nine potential suppliers for the Multi-Role Naval Embarked Helicopter. These are Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa S.A., Kaman Aerospace Corporation, Bell Textron Inc., General Dynamics Mission Systems – Canada Inc., WSK “PZL Swidnik” S.A., Enamor Sp., Airbus Helicopters SAS, Polskie Zaklady Lotnicze Sp. and Elbit systems Ltd. Leonardo has declared that the Swidnik-based facility would be offering the AW159 platform.

There is still the possibility that Kaman Aerospace Corporation, which build the SH-2G Seasprite, will work along with General Dynamics Mission Systems – Canada Inc. to modernise and extend the lifecycle of the Polish SH-2G Seasprites just like they did for New Zealand and Peru. For this they would offer an in-depth overhaul for the helicopters with a potential option for acquiring more (second hand) Seasprites.

The Polish MoD will start technical dialogues with the potential suppliers in the second half of 2020.
