Deal Signed For Production Of Europe's Future Combat Air System Prototype

Europe Future Combat Air System update

On 20 February 2020, the ministers of defence of France and Germany signed a deal, as part of the 150 million euro (USD 162 million) contract, for the production of a prototype of Europe’s Future Combat Air System, the next generation stealth fighter.

The FCAS prototype should be ready by 2026 and marks a 12 million euro investment by 2030 in order to have the new planes operational toward 2040. The FCAS will be manufactured by Airbus Defense and Space, Dassault Aviation alongside Safran and Thales of France, German engine maker MTU, and the European missile joint venture MBDA.

Both ministers expect Spain to soon join the project. That country is expecting to participate with another 45 million euros for the project. There are no indications that other European Union nations will join the project, which is planned to replace the Typhoon and Rafale.

The UK focuses on the BAE Tempest stealth fighter project, together with Italy and, reportedly, The Netherlands.
