The 302 Hikotai, part of the Hokubu Koku Homentai (Northern Air Defence Force) started to furnish their F-35As with a well-known marking, the same that was carried on F-4EJs since the mid seventies. Unfortunately, as usual with nearly all F-35s, the markings are in standard toned-down.
The 302 Hikotai was established on 1 October 1974 at Chitose air base (Hokkaido prefecture, Japan) as the second F-4EJ squadron within the Japan Air Self Defense Force (JASDF). The 301st Hikotai was the first F-4EJ unit, but was used for training on the new type. The 302nd became the first operational F-4EJ squadron and proudly carried this so called "Oshiro Eagle" Eagle marking (that shows the unit designation, the three wings reflecting the "3", the tail the "0" and the two feet the "2" (302).
The squadron was later moved to Naha (1985), Hyakuri (2009) and after it ceased flying with the Phantom, it moved to Misawa where it received the first F-35As.
And history repeats, now the 301st became the first ops F-35A squadron within the JASDF, while the 302nd (former Rinji squadron, renamed out of 302 on 26 March 2019 that trained F-35 pilots) will become the second JASDF Lightning squadron. The photo was made at Misawa Air Base on 2 March 2020.
