Germany To Purchase Additional H145 Helicopters

Additional H145s for Germany

The German Defence Forces are looking for the purchase of at least 60 H145M helicopters for a variety of missions, including training and light attack. The HEER (German Army) alone has a requirement for 48 H145Ms; the Luftwaffe (GAF, German Air Force) and the German Navy need around 16 H145Ms between them.

If the intended purchase will be materialised, the first H145Ms will replace the older EC135s and Bell 206s which are currently operated by the Army's Internationales Hubschrauberausbildungszentrum (International Helicopter Training Centre) at Buckeburg. The contracts for these helicopters will expire before the end of 2021.

The Luftwaffe already bought 15 H145Ms for special operations (H145M LUH SOF) and seven H145Ms for Search and Rescue missions (H145M LUH SAR). The Special Operations helicopters are based at Laupheim with Hubschraubergeschwader 64 (HSG64). The SAR H145Ms are in the process of delivery and will replace the ageing SAR equipped UH-1D Iroquois helicopters at Norvenich, Niederstetten and Holzdorf.

The new H145M, also known as the Light Utility Helicopter Streitkrafte (H145M LUH SK), can be equipped with the Airbus Helicopters’ HForce modular weapons system, to support the Tiger UHT in the light attack role. Because this bay is modular, the new H145M can also be used in a variety of roles, like liaison, transport and medevac. But it will also fill the gap in training hours for NH90 and Tiger UHT helicopter crews as these helicopters have a low availability rate and are more costly to operate for training hours only.

The unofficial requirement for the HEER is 24 for training and a further 24 as battlefield utility helicopters to equip its three aviation regiments.
