“Just some nice Pictures...!”

Our contributor Dylan Phelps from Boneyard Safari send us these excellent, but also sad 😔 pictures of Kangaroos in the Californian desert.

First he was able to shoot the arrival of the very last Qantas B747-400 at Mojave (CA) on 24 July from the air, giving this unique perspective of VH-OEJ.

Another interesting shot is that of seven A380s parked at Victorville (CA). In the next few weeks all twelve will be there and, unfortunately, for quite some time.

Roman Galkov made this really nice dramatic shot of a Russian Federation - Aerospace Forces (RF VKS) Ilyushin Il-20M Coot-A, serial RF-95687, showing the aircraft's beautiful and distinctive lines. This Il-20M is most likely operated by the 535th Independent Composite Transport Aviation Regiment (535 OSAP). It was photographed at its homebase Rostov-na-Donu/North.

The Il-20M Coot-A is the COMINT/ELINT (Communication Intelligence/Electronic Intelligence) version of the Ilyushin 18, which was a large turboprop airliner that first flew in 1957 and became one of the best known and durable Soviet aircraft of its era. The Il-18 was one of the world's principal airliners for several decades and was widely exported. Due to the aircraft's airframe durability, many examples achieved over 45,000 flight hours.

On 10 August 2020, Russian Federation - Aerospace Forces (RF VKS) Tupolev Tu-154M RF-85655 (c/n 89A798) of the Space Research Center - Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center (70th OITAP), arrived at Köln-Bonn with call sign OSY331T. This call sign indicates the aircraft was performing an Open Skies mission.

The other task of this aircraft, in line with the unit operating this Tu-154, is related to cosmonaut training. The starboard side of the aircraft has all markings in Cyrillic, while the other side has the markings in English (Open Skies Russian Federation). The Tu-154 will stay at Köln-Bonn until Friday 14 August 2020.

But also a nice visitor! On 10 August 2020, US Army RO-6A (Dash 8, serial 60590 and call sign Polar90) made a stop-over at Prestwick (UK). The Dash 8 came from Keflavik (Iceland) and departed to Hannover-Langenhagen (Germany), after which it continued further east.

According to Scramble Magazine database, most - if not all - RO-6A aircraft are operated by the 204th MI Bn (Military Intelligence Battalion) based at El Paso-Biggs AAF (Fort Bliss) (TX).

However, this specific RO-6A is new to our database. All known serials have a relation to the aircraft's construction number. So this one would be c/n 590, which makes it former N590K, which in turn was operated by the Dynamic Aviation Group from Bridgewater (VA) since August 2018. This company has close ties with the US military. The Dash 8 has to have received its US Army serial recently.

Any information on the full serial and date of registration is welcome.

Rick Sleight send us some high resolution photos of the arrival of the Royal Saudi Air Force Boeing F-15SA (Saudi Advanced) fighter aircraft at RAF Lakenheath (UK) on Tuesday 11 August 2020.

The aircraft arrived as Retro 71/74 in landing order from 19:25 hrs LT, serials 12-1033, 12-1034, 12-1035 and 12-1084. The latter one (1084) performed a go-around to give the photographers a second chance.

The sole Airbus A319CJ of the Armenian Government, registered 701, has been given a new lick of paint. We think it looks quite nice.

It was rolled-out of the paintshop at Ostrava on 15 August where Radim Koblížka was present to take this picture.

On 27 July this C-27J CSX62308 visited Venegono. It is destined for the Kenya Air Force where it will become 222 once in service.

Fabrizio Capenti was present to capture the moment.

Although the reason for these aircraft to come into action never means much good, it does sometimes provide nice photo opportunities. At this moment an impressive number of wildfires are raging in the western United States and Dylan Phelps of Boneyard Safari ventured to Redmond and Medford (OR) to catch some of the planes involved in firefighting. He provided us with some very fine shots.

MD-87 N293EA “Tanker 103” has been flying with Erickson Aero Tanker as a firefighting aircraft since May 2014. It has c/n 53209 and was originally delivered to Iberia as EC-635 in June 1991 and was reregistered as EC-FFA in September of the same year. It was phased out in April 2012 and was scheduled to go to SAS as SE-DMN. The aircraft was actually registered as such, but in July 2012 it moved to Erickson for conversion to firefighter.

The impressive DC-7B you see taking off is “Tanker 60”, which is N838D, also flown by Erickson Aero Tanker. It is, in fact, the very last flying DC-7 in the world. It is currently in its final firefighting season, as it is slated to be retired. This beautiful aircraft is a vintage 1958 Douglas product and has always carried the same registration. It was first delivered to Eastern Air Lines in February 1958, which used it until 1966 when it moved to California Airmotive. In the same year it switched to Skyway Travellers and two years later it moved to Thompson Flying Services. It started firefighting as early as 1973, when it became part of the fleet of TBM. That is when it received the “Tanker 60” code. In 1991 it moved to NV-BLM Sierra Front. In 2007 it was acquired by Butler Aircraft Company and in 2010 by Garnick Holdings. In 2012 Corsair Two became the new owner, before eventually ending up in the fleet of Erickson in 2014.

The Convair 580 is C-FKFA of Conair and is flying as “Tanker 52”. It has been part of the fleet of Conair since 2003. It started its flying career in August 1953 when it was delivered to Delta Air Lines as N4810C as a Convair 340. It was converted to a 440 a few years later. The Convair moved to North Central Airlines as N4810C in August 1961 after being converted into a Convair 580. In 1977 it moved to Canada to fly with Quebecair as C-FKFA, but moved back to the USA in 1984 when it changed to Seair Airmotive as N5807. In 1991 it returned to Canada to fly with Kelowna Flightcraft Air Charter, once again as C-FKFA. It did so until 2003.

The last picture is C-23C Sherpa N145Z of the US Forest Service. This plane was originally used by the US Army as 94-00311 from 1998 until September 2014 when it moved to the USFS.
